If you’re anything like me, you love to see money coming into your accounts and hate to see it leave. Every time I see money going out of my account there’s a feeling of disappointment. But I know that if I’m not careful, I can get a little too picky about spending, even when I really need to. Sometimes spending a little money now will help you save money in the long run. With that in mind, there are three cases that I always recommend that you spend the money to have a bookkeeper perform an accounting software review.

Have you been doing it yourself?

Every business goes through the DIY phase, unless it’s a well funded start-up with millions on the line. But for the rest of us, running a business requires us to get our hands dirty. And while it’s necessary to do your own books while you are getting started, it can come back to bite you if you aren’t careful.

Seemingly small errors in your accounting can lead to big problems with everybody’s least favorite alphabet agency- the IRS. I don’t know of anyone who has been happy to be selected for an audit. If you ever meet someone who is, they’re probably not right in the head. Having an accounting software review can help you catch the mistakes that would lead to the taxman beating down your door.

Are you planning on growing your business this year?

Some people are happy having a business that brings in the same amount of revenue, from the same people every month. And for them, the idea of growth is unpleasant. But for the rest of us who want to make more money and build more successful businesses, growth is an aspiration and hope.

But is your business set up to grow? Are your finances capable of supporting growth? And more importantly, how can you grow your business efficiently if you don’t know where you are starting from?

An accounting software review shows you where you are now and where your weaknesses are, so you can plan for stable and steady growth. If you don’t get one, you’re risking your entire business, on the guess that you might be financially stable enough to support business growth and hopefully not cause your business to implode.

Are you looking for a bookkeeper?

When you are looking for a bookkeeper, how can you tell that you have found the one that will serve you best? It can feel tricky and you might not have the technical know-how to be certain that your bookkeeper will be able to serve your needs. However there is one thing that a good bookkeeper does when accepting a new account.

A good bookkeeper will review the accounts before beginning so they can catch and fix errors and know where blind-spots are. Your bookkeeper shouldn’t plunge in blind and try to figure it out on the fly. Knowing is half the battle, as they say.
